Saab supplying radar to U.S. Coast Guard

Saab is supplying its Sea Giraffe Agile Multi Beam Multi-Mode Radar for the U.S. Coast Guard's newest class of ship, the Offshore Patrol Cutter.

The order received is for two radar systems and was issued by the U.S. Navy, and carries a value of $16.8 million. Options for additional radars are included and if exercised would bring the contract value to as much as $118.5 million.

"The U.S. Coast Guard is increasingly called upon to support an array of critical missions in the most challenging conditions," Erik Smith, president and chief executive officer of Saab Defense and Security USA, said in a press release. "Saab's OPC MMR will support the customer in fulfilling those missions, from the tropics to the Arctic.

"The MMR radar provides simultaneous sea to sky radar coverage against the most challenging tracks to ensure total situational awareness."

The Sea Giraffe MMR is a 3D, electronically scanned phased array radar that provides high radiated power, selectable waveforms, and modern signal processing.

Saab's AN/SPS-77 radar is currently deployed the Navy's Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship. A derivative of AN/SPS-77, AN/SPN-50, is being developed to meet the Air Traffic Control needs on aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships.

Saab said the Sea Giraffe MMR order will contribute new jobs to SDAS' Sensor Systems facility in Syracuse, N.Y.

"This allows us to move forward on our Central New York growth strategy, and to expand our deliveries of Saab's proven naval radar capabilities to these important U.S. Navy and USCG customers," Smith said.
