Large wildfire erupts in southern Iran: state media

Tehran, July 21, 2026 (AFP) AFP

A large wildfire erupted on Tuesday near the city of Shiraz in southern Iran, state media reported, without specifying the cause.

State news agency IRNA said the fire broke out "in the highlands of the Derak and the mountains near Quran Gate in Shiraz".

"Thick smoke and flames are visible from various parts of the city," it said, adding that efforts were underway to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading.

"Nine fire stations and operational teams comprising around 100 firefighters have so far been deployed to the scene," IRNA said, citing Mahmoud Farmani, spokesman of the Shiraz fire service.

The fire comes two weeks after Iran and the US resumed conflict in the Middle East war. Washington carried out strikes on the Shiraz region overnight Monday into Tuesday, Mehr news agency reported.
